The Three Rules of Divination

“Those who truly understand the I Ching do not need to divine.”— Xunzi, Chapter on Grand Essentials

When we possess sufficient wisdom, there is no need to rely on divination to foresee our path. Yet in life, when we face critical decisions or a series of misfortunes, worry is inevitable. In those moments, guidance from an external source can bring a measure of calm to a troubled heart and illuminate the way forward.

No Doubt, No Divination

不疑不占

When your heart already holds the answer, when reason can guide you, or when effort alone can solve the problem — divination is unnecessary.

No Righteousness, No Divination

不義不占

When the answer you seek involves matters that violate morality, law, or endanger life — no answer will be given. Divination cannot guide the unjust.

No Sincerity, No Divination

不誠不占

If you approach divination with skepticism or doubt in the process, it means the matter is not truly a question for you — and divination is unnecessary.
